It's time to address the causes of Tasmania's poor health, not just the consequences

Every dollar invested in preventative health today will save the Tasmanian health system funds in acute and medical care in the future.

This is the message from a new coalition of leading Tasmanian community and health organisations that is lobbying Tasmania’s three political parties to embrace a new approach to preventative health in Tasmania as a major feature of their policies for the March 20 State Election.

The Our Island Our Voices campaign statement addresses the causes of poor health. The coalition includes representatives of the Tasmanian Chronic Disease Prevention Alliance and the Tasmanian Community Services Sector.

All agree the Tasmanian health system can no longer afford to address just the consequences of sickness and disease.

Tasmania has some of the poorest health outcomes in the nation and this directly affects our State’s economy through the pressure it places on our public health system and reduced participation in our workforce.

As our population ages the demand on expensive health services is going to continue to grow unless we start addressing the causes of our poor health through a strategic whole of government and community approach to health promotion.
