Tasmania’s public transport system needs a significant injection of funding to ensure services and infrastructure are able to meet the changing needs and expectations of Tasmanians.
The next Tasmanian Government should commit to revolutionising the public transport system in Tasmania through the creation of a $100 million fund (Transport 21) to support investment in new sustainable transport infrastructure. This fund could be used to leverage investment from the Commonwealth Government and Infrastructure Australia.
While $100 million may sound like a significant injection of funding, the reality is that if funded over five years it is relative to many other major infrastructure projects currently underway across Tasmania including the Brighton Bypass ($164 million), Brighton Transport Hub ($151m), Kingston Bypass ($30m), Bass Highway upgrades ($42m) and East Tamer Highway ($26m) to name just a few.
A plan for action
This $100 million fund should focus on the following priorities:
1. Improving Tasmania’s mass transit system
2. Supporting practical community based public transport solutions
3. Making Tasmania’s public transport system more user friendly
4. A strategic approach to planning Tasmania’s public transport system.
