Our Island Our Voices / EMRS Polling

In November 2009 the Our Island Our Voices campaign commissioned independent polling by Tasmanian research company EMRS into the issues that are important to Tasmanians in the March 2010 State Election.

The results of this polling will be used to advise and influence political parties and candidates in the March State Election on the important issues for Tasmanians in deciding how they vote in March.

The results of the polling will be gradually released to the public over coming months.

Polling reveals Education & Health top issues in State Election Minimize

The results of independent polling into the key issues for Tasmanians in the 2010 State Election commissioned by the Our Island Our Voices campaign, reveals that education and health are easily the top election issues for most Tasmanians.

The polling should send a clear message to all political parties and candidates in the March 20 election that health and education are the key issues in the minds of Tasmanian voters.

36% of Tasmanian voters surveyed nominated education and 47% nominated issues relating to healthcare as the most important issues to them in deciding which party to vote for in the election. Environmental issues was third at 12%, Land Tax was found to be an important issues in the election to just 2% of voters.

Importantly, voters who said they were currently undecided on which party to vote for in March overwhelmingly nominated education and health as their most important issues in deciding which party will ultimately win their vote.

This shows there are clearly votes to be won between now and March for the party that is prepared to make significant policy and funding commitments in the key areas that affect all Tasmanians - health and education.

The independent polling was undertaken in mid November by leading Tasmanian research company EMRS and asked Tasmanian voters across all electorates and demographics what issues were most important to them in deciding who they vote for in the March election.

Polling Reveals Land Tax Not An Issue for Most Tasmanians Minimize

With the State Government expected to shortly announce changes to land tax, the Our Island Our Voices campaign has released further results from its independent EMRS polling into issues for Tasmanians in the current State Election campaign.

The results overwhelmingly reveal voters think investing in core government services is more important to them in this election campaign then reducing state taxes.

1006 Tasmanian voters across all electorates and demographics were asked the following question:

What is more important to you in this state election?
-          Investing in services such as heath, education and community services? or
-          Reducing state taxes such as land tax and payroll tax?

The results are overwhelming; with 81% of Tasmanian voters nominating investment in services such as healthcare and education as more important to them then reducing state taxes.

Just 12% of voters nominated tax relief as more important than improving government services.

Suprising results in Midland Highway vs Public Transport Poll Minimize

The Our Island Our Voices campaign for a Fairer Tasmania has released further results from independent EMRS polling into the key issues for Tasmanian voters in the March 20 State Election.

The polling reveals there are similar levels of support in the Tasmanian community for upgrading the Midland Highway as there is for further investment in Tasmania's public transport infrastructure.

In the Southern Tasmanian predominantly urban electorates of Denison and Franklin more voters would prefer the next Tasmanian Government prioritise investment in public transport over a dual land Midland Highway.

Our Island Our Voices released the polling data to coinscide with the launch of its latest statement on important issues in the March 20 Election.

Our Island Our Voices is calling on Tasmania's political parties to commit to revolutionising public transport in Tasmania through a signficiant investment in passenger transport infrastructure and startegies to make services more user friendly.
